Keeping Sand Bed Clean

I have a shallow sand bed in my reef tank. One side has a sand sifting starfish who keeps it pretty clean. The other side looks like the picture below. It's kind'a clumpy sand/coral with algae. I sift it when doing water changes, but can't get it clean. Any suggestions? I already have a red cucumber, tiger tail cucumber, few crabs and snails.

Re: Keeping Sand Bed Clean

in my opinion nassarius snails are the best for stirring the sand bed. They burry themselves in the sand and pop up to eat.

Now if you have an algae problem, then you need to take care of that by removing the nutrients that are feeding it.

Maybe I'm missing something.. why doesn't the starfish go on "both" sides of the tank?

Re: Keeping Sand Bed Clean

I do weekly 30 gallon water changes in my 150 display tank. Every two weeks I clean the sand by syphoning off the debris. My sandbed is about 1.5" to 2" deep.
I have a ton of those nassarius snails, they spend their time under the sand cruising around doing whatever snails do.
Give me a call the next time you're in Newberg. You can stop by, and I'll give you a baggie of sand out of my tank for the added diversity.
On a side note, are you going to the Eric Borneman meeting this Sunday?

Re: Keeping Sand Bed Clean

Hello, Not sure why the star fish stays on one side. Guess he's not much for traveling.

Nu2reef-n - I'm not going to make it to the meeting. Sounds interesting though!

I'll get some more snails for sure.

thx
