Re: Picture of the day...alien invaders...

well its not a critter as such, more a monster from the deep.

i took this pic of my dads fish he caught yesterday when we went boat fishing.

its a conger eel, about 5'-6' aprox 20lbs-30lbs of pi**ed off eel.

Re: Picture of the day...alien invaders...

yeah they are, they have been took abord on boats and have bit peoples toes off.
They are also very hard to kill, you can gut them (pull out there insides) and they will still live for an hour or so, but they do make very nice fish (eel) stake.

wouldnt want one in my tank.

cheers james

Gene, I have the same coral with the same digital hydroids on them as well. What (macro) lens did you use? Great picture!

Re: Picture of the day...alien invaders...

Reef_obsessed,

I think those are pinaple sponges that are quite common in the tanks. I had them for a while and then they sort of disappeared.

Martin, the lens I took the picture with was Canon's EFS 60mm f2.8 macro lens.
I had this little hydroids on another colony but that colony nearly died with the rest of my sps and they kind of gone... now I found them on this colony.
The other colony is making a comeback but no hydroids.
Here's another shot of them, a tad closer and I think it shows more detail on the hydroids.

Gene, Thats a awsome pic! Thanks for the info on the lens. I have been looking for a macro lens that is not macro @300mm.

Re: Picture of the day...alien invaders...

Well I have nothing really exciting but here are a couple pics.
The Electric Blue Legs hermit was putting on a show for us, he stripped down to his bare bottom! woo hoo!
The snail was removed because it was a predator and so was the mantis and the bristleworm, well he was just big, 5-6" when he's really moving along...

Re: Picture of the day...alien invaders...

Cool shots Louise!
Now, I understand you removed the whelk and a mantis, but why take out beneficial critter like that fireworm? I bet it just creeped you out, right?

Martin, I found more of those hydroids on the original colony I found them on. It's crazy how persistant some of this critters are...

I hope you can spot them in this image.

I also snapped a shot of small Asteriniid starfish that got caught on the glass when metal halides came on.
Here's ventral view of it.

Re: Picture of the day...alien invaders...

I didn't take out the fire worm, I guess I just phrased it wrong, I meant that I just included his pic cuz he was big, I have lot's of those all over the tank!
Cute star fish, I think I have a few too but I don't see them often...

"Here;s looking at you kid.."

This guy sturtled me this morning, try looking in one of those eyes with a macro lens when you don't expect it...

Re: Picture of the day...alien invaders...

thanks gene, i like the pic but i want an SLR so i can do better macro shots.
my current camera donsnt have interchangeable lenses, so im stuck with that being the closeist i can get with useing digital zoom, and when i use that it gets all pixulated.

cheers james

I agree, never use digital zoom if you want your image to be nice and clear.
Having siad that, I personally think p&s cameras do exellent job when in "macro"
mode, which isn't really macro(1:1) but a close up instead, technically speaking.
Getting closer to a subject is something that we all want( with a stationary subject like corals) but it's not always possible even with dslr and a true macro lens, but we compromize.
You know, you can buy an adapter that lets you reverse a lens( like 50mm for example) and attach it to your p&s front element in reverse, hence increasing magnification twofold( I think). Let me look for a link describing this and all the components you would need. It is the cheapest way I know to get closer but you will loose alot of light and working distance will be miniscule as well.

PS>Found it! Check out what this guy accomplished with a point and shoot Canon and a few gudgets...

If I was selling my platletts for Reef cash, I'd consider getting a new camera. Right now it's just more fun seeing your pics.
