My reef so far

I thought it would be fun to post a picture of my tank considering I ask so many questions here. This is how far along I am after about 8 months. Its a beginer tank, mushrooms and various polyps is all it will ever be. I did use a good skimmer and a good light and the corals love it. Its two 150 MH, 20,000k bulbs and a deltec hang on the back skimmer. The pictures kind of dark, Ill have to get with Ninong or Posiden about the cameras to use!

I was told by more than a few that my '75 Gallon' was too small for a Purple Tang, that they need at least a 125.

Re: My reef so far

Freddy,
Tank looks great! What size tank?? I got a 55 setup, still new to this whole reef world-here is a pic.
Reef on...
Waterwidget,
How do you like the light?? I just got a Finnex fixture and...not so impressed. I had a coralife (4-65 watt compact flo's) and upgraded to this Finnex and it doesn't seem to be properly vented or something. Gets stupid hot!! It's a 6-54 watt T5 set up. How is the heat that the coralife pro light kicks out? Does it fit ok? Or any other suggestions welcome too
Thanks,
David

Re: My reef so far

First off the system was pricey but I am happy, you get what you pay for. Yes my tank temp went up from 78 to 82 or so but that is to be expected with halides. I lowered the photo period to two hours of antinic followed by eight of halides followed by antinic in the evening after which the moonlights take over for the night. I have an aqua c remora pro with the rio 1400 pump and had to reverse the legs so they bend the opposite way they are supposed to so it will fit on my 55 gallon but that is a trade off because the remora is an excellent skimmer the film on the top of the water is gone and the cup is already half full after about 48 hours. I had an orbit exteme system before this one and I will never part with the coralife. I don't like having to put the ballast under the aquarim stand but that can't be helped I guess. I is better than I had hopped for. If you can get one. I'm in love with mine and I plan on adding more live rock and then another clam I saw at the LFS. Don't know the name but I got the light dependant story from the employee and I was told it will only die under compact florecents so I can't wait to see the look on the idiot's face when I tell him I'll take the clam now. I don't mean to sound cheesy but all the good specimens a very light dependant and they always seem to pry into you when you want something and then they tell you you can't buy it or shouldn't because of your set up. I am a bit more educated now and upgraded to some really nice equip. I should get a sump system also and ditch the canister but it works for now..
Yes if you can ditch the other system and get a coralife pro you won't be disappointed, I guarantee it..
good luck.
As far as the tang goes got him from online Drs Foster and Smith live aquaria. Seems to have a temperment for a 55 gal. Make sure you have lots of live rock and treat him right and he should be happy he has you for a friend or food source depending on your point of view.

Re: My reef so far

I have a 55 gallon tank, its a old fish tank, not a reef ready tank. I like the MH lights I am now using. The heat really did not go up very much because they are only 150watts each so its not much more than what I had before in a florecent...its just more intense.

My temperature is 76-84. in the winter with the light off its 76, in the summer with the light on its up to 82, every now and again, up to 84 at the highest.

Your tank has a lot of coraline algae in it, it looks nice. Like me, I am about 4-5 corals short of being complete. I need more money/time! I am from waukesha wisconsin origonally, now I live in Phoenix! what part of wisco are you in?

Re: My reef so far

I live in Oconomowoc and I work in Waukesha. Halides kinda scare me for where I have the tank now. The ceiling I have is a definate fire hazzard (burlap with rope lighting=looks cool) and I have to watch out for the heat that rises above the tank. I took some new pics yesterday and I will post tonight. The water here kinda sucks, but beautiful place to live, thank God for R/O!!
