Re: What's This?
Looks like a fungus/bacterial mat, which happens when there is die off on the rock.
edited to add: If it lifts off easily, kind of like a spider web, then it would be a fungus/bacterial mat, if it does not lift off, and feels, well..spongy, then it is most likely a sponge. Chuck Last edited by charlesr1958; 02-26-2007 at 10:55 AM. |

Re: What's This?
Thanks Chuck,
I believe it's not a sponge but the bacterial/fungus thing. So I guess I should remove it. Do you know if it will have any adverse affects on my tank? Hank in SoCal |

Re: What's This?
You can remove it by siphoning it out, but as long as there is dead material or "organics" in that area, it will most likely return. The "mat" itself is harmless, although, if there was/is a lot of die off on the rocks, you could see an ammonia/nitrate spike.
