Water Change Question

Saltwater tank - Water Change Question?

I have a 250g Reef tank, Nitrite 10/Nitrate 0/PH 8.4 (Thanks to Live Rock). I do a 15g-30g water change once or twice a month mainly for supplements. I use RO/DI water and Reef Crystals for the water changes. RO meter is showing 003ppm

The day after the water change, my substrate gets full of brown/green algae. Has anyone experienced this, or know what may be causing it?

Algae disapears after avout 3-5 days, most likely from the golbies.

Re: Water Change Question

Hi tcook1034,

You can't possibly have 10 ppm Nitrite. Did you mean to say 10 ppm Nitrate?

You may have a phosphate problem. Possibly even a phosphate and silicate problem. Whether R.O./D.I. units can completely remove phosphate always provides for interesting discussions.

What you could try the next time you get ready to do a water change, is run a PolyBioMarine polyfilter in your sump and maybe even an iron oxide based phosphate sponge product. If the problem is caused by phosphate and/or silicate, that should take care of it.

Good luck!
