Cleaner Shrimp Question

I have a cleaner shrimp with a missing claw!! Has this ever happened before to anyone? I have a 55 gal. tank with a yellow tang ( I know a no no! He's finding a new home shortly) Clown Fish, Bar Goby and several small crabs. Tank is about 7 months old. I don't know any water parameters if that's the cause i just did a water change on Friday 10 gal. I just got a text from the wife.

Any help!!

Re: Cleaner Shrimp Question

Your tank is probably low on calcium. This happened to my daughter's coral banded shrimp about 2 months ago. I kept harping on her about adding calcium and testing for it and one morning her shrimp shed and had only 3 legs left and no claws so I took charge and started adding calcium until it was up to 420. A few weeks later he shed again and had all his appendages again.
Her calcium was at about 300 when I started adding, now she takes care of her own tank because she doesn't want her shrimp to go through the same ordeal again...

Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach him how to fish and you get rid of him all weekend.

Re: Cleaner Shrimp Question

I wouldn't be surprised if the clown or one of the crabs harrassed him and I wouldn't assume it has anything to do with water quality. It's not uncommon for them to lose appendages and they grow them back within a few molts.
