Tank Update

Well, after the tank disasters of last fall/summer, it's been awhile since I've wanted to take any pictures. But it's been looking decent lately...

Re: Tank Update

Thanks guys!

Mike- I don't think the clams are as big as they may look. That blue one is only about 4in long. The Deresa is getting pretty big though. I swear it was only about 1/2 that size when I bought it.

Re: Tank Update

sihaya, looking real nice, but im a little concern to how close this tank is to a window that is it getting all the natural light as well for this in time, if it is, algae will or could become a serious issue for your tank>

Re: Tank Update

At the risk of firing up a recent argument, unless her tank has high nutrients, she won't have any algae problems w/ direct sunlight (or any type of light).

Re: Tank Update

That Deresa is obviously VERY HAPPY! What is that clamp light behind your tank for? Is that a sump light?

How is my mortal lover doing?

Re: Tank Update

Old Man Of The Sea: that's an interesting concern about the window light. But I have two reasons why I might disagree: 1) whatever light is coming through the window, it's likely nothing compared to the 250 watt double ended HQI MH I have over the tank. Seriously, the tank is at least 3ft from the window and any light coming through it is coming in at an angle anyway. 2) I agree with CSeaSee that light is not what causes algae problems. There are all kinds of algae that can grow in very low lighting conditions.

The tank is about 2 years old now and I have had a few transient algal blooms. But for the most part, and the only real algae problem I have that just won't go away is that darn caulerpa. I can't get rid of it and I hate it!

Mike- yes, the Deresa does seem "happy as a clam." lol But honestly, if it keeps growing the way it has been, I'm going to run out of room for him. And I knew when I bought it that they could get real big, but I didn't know they grew that fast! I wonder if it has anything to do with all the phytoplankton I feed the tank. It's not a baby anymore, so I don't know if the phytoplankton makes much a difference or not at this point.

Your mortal lover is doing pretty good actually! lol The parts that survived have completely healed and she feeds aggressively at night. It may be awhile before she grows back over the dead parts though. She's not like the freak of a LPS that Medusa is who grows like a friggin' acropora. I should show you all what Medusa looked like when I first bought her and what she looks like now. It's crazy how fast she grew!

Re: Tank Update

sihaya, all is true enough in some respect, but did you ever wonder why this is that you cannot rid yourself of a certain type of algae. As well, you must admit however that there is something bothering you as far as algae goes.

For one thing, we all do a good many things which work. But also, we as well do something's a bit different from one another and no two hobbyist very much would get the same results.

Where I have my 180 reef tank, it does get a good deal of direct and not so direct sunlight, I have the shades down to where this will not become an issue for the area that gets this sunlight, I would have much algae issues to combat.

I do plan to have everything in which is required for an engineer crew from cucumbers and urchins as well as starfish, but no engineer gobies, yuck> I did however had three in the 180 when it was a soft coral tank and figure I can manage without them when the tanks are with SPS coral.

Also, the light does however feed the algae, I do follow your understanding on the light part of this, for I not any algae in my twin eel tanks.
