Weez,

I see you have a 100 GPD RO/DI. I was told that the 100 GPD membranes are only good for 85%-90% removal of solids.....do you have a TDS meter to test disolved solids coming from the RO part of your unit? I was told that the 75 GPD membranes are good for 99% removal and that should make you DO cartridge last much longer if you switch to the 75 GPD membranes

Yes they can live and even thrive in saltwater produced from your tap water. What everyone is saying is that the long term health of your system (and whether or not you enjoy the hobby or live with constant frustrations due to algae) is dependant on the quality of your source water.

i use tap now in my tank and i dont have large algae problems. what will change

I don't have one (TDS) but a fellow hobbyist does and he checks my water every month or so, so far it's still good. I checked it for nitrates last month because I thought maybe that's where they were coming from and the nitrates in my tap water was between 25-50 and the filtered was 0.
Also my unit never made 100g a day, running all day (24 hours) it would make about 40 gallons tops

Anyways I'm due for a (filter) change in before summer so I will look into what you're saying and I'll probably pick up my own TDS meter at the same time.

Meat, we're offering help and it would seem you aren't taking our advice. To start with...Yes, your corals will survive in saltwater mixed using water from your tap. Depending on your water supply, you may have problems with phosphates or nitrates. If so, you may have algae problems. In the long run, you'll be better off using RO/DI water, whether you purchase an RO/DI unit or buy RO/DI water. Either one will work fine.

Another issue that you seem to be ignoring is lighting. I understand that you don't want to purchase lighting right now. Maybe you should wait on corals until you ARE ready to purchase better lighting. I assume you have NO (Normal Output) fluorescents on your tank right now? In a 55 gallon, that lighting isn't going to penetrate very deep at all. You can keep mushrooms, Xenia and other soft corals in that tank but they aren't going to thrive. There are certain mushrooms that are less light demanding that others. They may do better. If you keep Xenia high up in the tank, it may be alright. However, if you waited until you upgrade to at least PC lighting, you won't be near as limited and you'll be able to keep any soft coral and most LPS corals, without having to worry about their health.
