If you can have two hours of afternoon sunlight in your reeftank would you take it?
Or would you block it out (so lighting is more controllable, i.e. in case of an algae outbreak)?

YES! I would take it in a minute. I have actually considered using those "Light Tubes" on a future reef tank project.
Absolutely, no questions asked. Actually, I do have some sunlight in the afternoon and the corals never seem happier. Maintain good water quality and algae will never be a problem.

Just tell your wife that having a tank teaches you all sorts of new DIY skills...which will save lots of money around the house...so you can buy more stuff for your tank...so you can learn more skills...
Sunlight here to! Also make sure your flow is evenly distributed to help alleviate any problem spots for algea to grow along with the water quality.
When I've learned everything - bury me!!
It would have to be a supplement, not the primary. I live to far north, and have to many cloudy days to use it as a primary source, but it sure would be cool to have the extra PAR for "free".
Take the sunlight! I get 2 to 3 hours in the afternoon from May through October or so (when we change the clocks in the fall). I get a little more algae on the glass, but that's what algae magnets are for, right?Seriously -- I think all the other animals really enjoy the "real thing".

Personally, I wouldn't. I would rather have more controlled lighting and not have to worry about the possible heat from a few hours of direct sunlight. Of course, we do not run a chiller so that is more of a concern to me than it would be for others.
