substrates???

hey!!
ok......this is my first reef tank. My dad had one for several years, and I will be using all of his equipment. I need sand!! I'm confused on the type and grain size that should be used. I was wondering if I could still get good sand at a builders supply outlet, or do i have to pay the high prices at the pet shops? Any help would be appreciated.

I used a mix of oolitic sand that I bought and play sand from Lowes for my very deep sand bed. Lowes has some right now for around $3 a bag and it's white. The bag is clear and shows two kids playing on the front but I don't remember who makes it. I like a mix because it doesn't seem to kick up as much and I can still do it cheap and get a little buffering out of it.
