Got tank running yesterday...everything is great...not too happy with temp, only a 24 nano and its at 85ish atm.
I did not mention that I put a moving powerhead in it also...could that be the culprit?? Sorry for the dumb questions. ![]() Last edited by Yankee I Am; 07-05-2007 at 07:44 AM. |

Re: Is this normal
The powerhead could be the problem. What lites are you using? Try a fan or 2 pointed across the surface for a while and see if that helps.

Re: Is this normal
What is the ambient temperature in the room you're keeping the tank? The nanos with full hoods are notoriously hard to keep cool. The hood traps all the heat from the bulbs and doesn't allow the surface of the water to evaporate off to cool it.
If you're a bit of a handyman you could add another fan or two to the hood, but it will involve cutting vents and a little bit of wiring. There are also a few small chillers that could work in that size of a tank, but would likely involve plumbing the tank in some way as well. If it is a temporary fix for just a really hot day or a home AC failure try propping the hood partway up with something and setting a desk fan next to the tank to blow in it. It won't be the prettiest display ever, but it will help with the temp. |

Re: Is this normal
I suppose I could get a flex fan and mount it on the tank...Ill see if turning off the powerhead worked when I get home. The lid and lights is the standard for a 24 nano...looking at a sunpod and makinging it an open top anyhow.
Temp in room is about 76ish (im too cheap to ac the house colder, I live in Georgia) At what point do I seriously worry..I have some great live rock with all kinds of stuff growing and 2 clowns...No corals yet, was gonna get one today Russ |

Re: Is this normal
I've always heard 84* is the highest a tank should be, but I doubt you are going to hit any specific number that causes a sudden death. I would expect more of a gradual decline in healthiness from the overheating as long as the temps are reasonably stable. If they are bouncing from hot to cool and back and forth a lot during the day, then I would be very concerned regardless of what the actual numbers are.
