how are they jumping out? you dont have covers on the tank? or are they jumping into the overflow?
This is getting depressing, all is going well and I get another suicidal fish!!![]()
This time it was one of my Anthias. I'm pretty sure it was because they were both males. I started out ordering 4, 2 arrived doa and now one jumps. This is so depressing! I'm not sure ordering more is a good idea either. Will the lone anthias be OK?

No covers, it gets too hot if I do.
How many of you guys have covers on your tanks? Looks like I'll have o find a way of covering without adding to my heat, or difuse my light for that matter...

well on my true vue, i use the clear plastic covers over the 2 holes that it came with. and my overflow notches go all the way up to the top, so i have no way at all for anything to escape. if anything, the covers keep the heat out of the tank. what kind of tank and light system to you have? and how hot does it get when you cover it?
My red lip blenny decided life was better outside my nano I found him behind the tank looking more like a potatoe chip than a fish. I don't feel so bad now at least others are sharing in my pain. Same problem if I close lid it gets to hot.
oh ok, i didnt know what kind of tank and lid you have. wow, thats a tuff one, im not sure what to say. but i keep rerading how people are having problems with thos nanos getting to hot.
Louise,
Bummer on the anthias!
I'm not sure how close your lights are to your tank, and if you are using MH's, but you might want to look into using plastic eggcrates. They can be found at most hardware stores and allow for air movement, and can definitely deter the jumpers.

I have a 90 gallon with sump. When I used to cover my 75 the heat would skyrocket.
I can imagine what goes through thier little heads after they've landed on the floor: "I meant to do that!... OK, This was a bad idea! A little help here, I'm sticking to the floor! Hulloooooo!"![]()
I don't have a nano but yes they do heat up pretty bad, my mom has a freshwater cube and she has to prop the lid during the day.
Hi Shay, I have the eggcrates but it really messes with the lighting![]()
My Halides/light fixture are 6.25" over the tank rim.I have to figure out someway of covering the tank before I lose another one. I wonder if I made a plexi frame with very open nylon mesh? Has anyone tried something like that?

I've used hardware cloth before to cover a turtle tank. It worked well and the holes are large enough that it doesn't affect the lighting overly much.
what is hardware cloth?

Eggcrate is awesome. You can cut it to any shape to fit any tank very easily and even cut out some smaller and larger holes within the grid. The light still penetrates with ease and you have no heat build up because it's essentially open top. It will sag under the heat of halide lamps with time but it's cheap and easily replaced. I had a Neocirrhites armatus jump one time and the eggcrate kept the next one from doing so. I watched the new one try and jump a few times then never tried again that I saw. I eventually removed the eggcrate and had no more jumping problems.

Samper makes a great point. Even if you feel that it does restrict the light somewhat, they only have to "hit the wall" once or twice and they will stop trying to jump. Then you can remove the eggcrate until the next new fish you add.
a cheap way to cool your tank down is to get a cup of your tank water 1-3 freeze it then float them every 3 hr or so 1 at a time and just repeat
