    refugium macroalgae

    Hi all,

well i am going to add a refugium to my sump. It wont be big, only really enough for some macro alae which im hoping will finanly get rid of my phosphate issues. (buffers have reduced it, but not enough).

What Macro algae would you recommend, for phosphate removal. Im worried about the sexual issues associated with some Macro algae.

    thanks guys

    Re: refugium macroalgae

Cheatomorpha or just Cheato for short is your best best. It is not invasive and never goes asexual.

If you can't find it locally, someone on eBay always has it real cheap with standard priority shipping. I've purchased some off there before just to get a little diversity for my sump and never had a problem.

Just put it under THIS lighting and it will grow like mad.

    Re: refugium macroalgae

Chaetomorpha is probably the safest macro algae for the refugium but any algae will work as long as it grows fast and consumes nutrients. Which is of course the purpose of having the green vegetation in the refugium in the first place. Isn't it?
    Kind regards,

    Gene.

    Re: refugium macroalgae

So I am looking to do some actual growing of some algae in my main tank. I hate my Fing protein skimmer. (basically everyone I have ever owned)

I'm going to be putting some under my 175 watt MHs. I don't really care if it grows too much, I'm just looking to reduce nitrates naturally.

What are the best looking kind and are there any actual saltwater plants that you all recommend. I typically keep planted tanks, but am trying to look differently at my reef these days.

I have a purple tang and I don't care if it eats it..

Check out my Low tech 75 gallon reef tank
