Re: clown
Hiding?
Maybe it doesn't have a place to call home where it can feel secure? From the photo in your profile, it appears you may have quite a few fish for a 40-gal tank. In particular, that beautiful Acanthurus japonicus needs something much larger than 40-gallons. I wouldn't advise keeping any tangs in a 40-gal tank.

Re: clown
Unless it feels threatened by some type of predatory species in the tank, this is pretty much usual clown behavior when they are not hosting any type of invertebrate. How long has your tank been setup?

Re: clown
Maybe the damsels have started to pick on him, they are mean-evil fish.
All fish will get along it seems when food is fed to them. They are only worried about getting the most food at that point. |

Re: clown
Yep, it most likely got to the point where the fish has had enough of them.
