Red face Pics and and Few Thoughts.?.?

Well, its been a couple weeks...Bought a 24 Nano, water and all. Added some new pumps, a Sunpod 150W 14000k yesterday...

Took some picks and daughter made me a photo bucket account...the pics have the sunpod on it...im psyched !!

http://s198.photobucket.com/albums/aa273/rao21462/24%20Nano/

Can someone tell what pic 9900 is?? It was about an 1/8 inch big and rubberbanded it to a rock. Its taking off and looking good...dont know what it is though...

Did that 5 gallon change...

Calcium went from 200 to 320 (from 400 when I brought home)
Temp is down to 81 from 85, open tank now even with MH
Nitrate is 10-20 still
PH 8.0
Ammonia 0

Other than the Kenya tree and I think a red shroom and a leather (not sure what kind), maybe you all can help ID

Any ideas or thoughts?? Do tell!

Russ

I think it's a colt coral. You should begin dripping kalk at night to get your ph up.

Re: Pics and and Few Thoughts.?.?

It's pickling lime...food grade. I get mine at Kroger and it's called Mrs. Wages Pickling lime. It comes in a green and white jar with a lid. You build a drip system consisting of a rubbermaid with a lid, a 1/4" od tubing ball valve and a small piece of 1/4" od tubing. You will have to drill the rubbermade and make the hole just slightly smaller than the threads on the ball valve so that you can screw it in. They you seal the inside and outside seams with a good glue. You pour in a few cups of kalk powder, fill it with RO/DI water and stir it. Then you let it settle and drip it at night. It's a great way to keep Ca and Alk in line as well as keep the ph from swinging too low at night. It's important that you situate the ball valve a few inches off of the bottom so that you're not dripping what settles out. Or you can get a kalk reactor. It's best to drip it into an overflow or sump and only at night as that's when your ph drops. With that nano you will have to drip it directly into the tank so do so into an area of high flow such as the outlet of a powerhead. You will have to test but I think you should be able to drip all your top off water with limewater. Your Ca or Alk or even Ph may get too high over time so test and keep an eye on it.

Re: Pics and and Few Thoughts.?.?

Pic 9900 is, I believe, Kenya Tree. It's a very easy soft coral to grow. I have a couple nice sized ones that regularly frag themselves by dropping branches. I frequently give branches away to other reefers and still have them popping up all over my tank...lol.

Kalk is a mixture that's usually made with RO water and Food Grade Pickling Lime. You can buy it at Walmart or any grocery store, usually in the canning supplies area. It's mixed at either 1 or 2 TBS per gallon of RO Water. The mixture is thought to be a balanced form or Alk and Ca and is dripped over night to help keep your Alk and Ca levels up. In my signature, there's a couple great links for help with Alk, Ca and Mg levels. One link is to Randy Holme's home made recipes for Alk, Ca and Mg supplements. The other link is to a great calculator that you can use to help get your tank balanced quickly.

It is a drag that most of us can never see each other's tanks in person! Everyone is so far away from each other, I'm from Canada, most of you are from the U.S. and I've seen GB, Australia, etc... So close and yet so far!

I'm lucky enough to have 2 within 1 hour, 3 within a half hour drive and 1 ten minutes away but DECENT is another ball of wax!

Re: Pics and and Few Thoughts.?.?

Believe it or not I hardly buy local, mostly it's just cuz I'm in the mood to shmooze, so I'll usually do my rounds, look around, ask questions so I can hear a rediculous answer and have a private chuckle. Then I go home and order online from straight across the country :
