    Smile power heads

    hi-
i read that you need 10x the turn over rate. i have a 55 gallon tank and i want to keep soft corals. so i will need power heads that = 550 gph. so should i get two power heads that = 550 gallons per hour? or just get one that turns over 600 gph?

if i get two where would i put them and if i get one where would i put that?

    thank you-

    Hi meat,

That is a generalized recommendation. The key is to make sure there are no dead spots in the tank, and that water is circulating everywhere. If I were you, I would look into a single Tunze 6060 and see how that works out for you. They are pricey, but worth it.

    meat,

A cheaper option would be a Hydor Koralia which you can find at Premium Aquatics on the sponsor page. I have heard a lot of good reviews on them. If you do a search you will probably be able to find a thread regarding them.

yea i was lookingin to one of those hydors that have a 600 gph turn over, but i thout that two smaller heads would be more affective. i havnr read anything bad about the hydors only good things. if i go and purchase a hydor where would i put it?

thank you both for the help

in my first tank, a 75, i placed my power heads on opposite ends with a wavemaster and they would kick on at different times so there was surge in one direction then surge in another..

If you can get 2-3 Maxijet 1200s and an oscillating device for each, that's another option as well.

Just tell your wife that having a tank teaches you all sorts of new DIY skills...which will save lots of money around the house...so you can buy more stuff for your tank...so you can learn more skills...

one 600gph Hydor Koralia should be fine???? someone just told me that the maxijet 1200's are 20 watts each and that could add a lot of heat to the tank....
    -thanks

    Re: power heads

I'm with Reefland in his advice. Main factor in having internal pumps is to eliminate dead spots in the tank. I don't believe in this 10x turnover or whatever number. Personally, I would look into adding couple of smaller pumps than one large one, and position them where you think you need more flow.
If you have sand bed the smaller pumps may be the answer, if you have no sand in the tank then I think two larger power heads on the opposite sides or back wall will do just fine.
    Kind regards,

    Gene.

    Re: power heads

I got rid of power heads and installed a closed loop system. no unsitely PH
I used one mag 12 and have four outlets it is great.
as far as where to place your big bulky PH, that is a matter of what flow you get when you put them in. you will have to move them around as dead zones will show themselves. the closed loop eliminates DZ also, at least it did for me.
