    Re: one drop of tank water under microscope!!!

    James, that was excellent, thanks for sharing. It brings me back to my college days when I spent hours in the lab looking through the eyepiece of a microscope. Amazing what life is present in our little homemade ecosystems(or pieces thereof).

    It's pretty clear why some insist that wearing gloves is necessary. With all those microscopic organisms in one drop of water, there's bound to be something bad in the whole tank.

    Thanks again,
    Rob

    Bump.

    Cool video:

    Looking at my tank with the naked eye just won't do anymore.

    Anybody own a decent microscope? I wonder if one can be had cheap that supports video.

    And then when Lee says he needs more info to diagnose something, I can be like "is this 400x magnification video enough?"

    Until then, I will try looking at my tank like this...

    There are quite a few online articles posted by serious hobbyists who have used their microscopes to examine the lifeforms in their aquariums.

    For starters, you might want to check out some of Dr. Ron Shimek's articles:
    Virtually all of Dr. Ron's articles include micrographs of the animals he is discussing. Just check out his various articles on amphipods, copepods, polychaetes, molluscs, etc. for examples.

    I have also come across other articles on microscopic examination of the microscopic life that inhabits our aquariums, both in the water and in the sand bed. An online search should turn out lots of links. It helps it you know what you're searching for and then enter that in Google's scholar search, refining your search by including the word micrograph in the description.

    Oops!!!

    Those links I posted for Dr. Ron's articles are to articles he published on Reefland. Those links have not yet been fully restored since the last software upgrade several weeks ago. They should be restored eventually and hopefully the links will actually work sometime soon.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

    P.S. -- How about a link to Dr. Ron's article about anemone husbandry? That's the only article by Dr. Ron on Reefland that I was able to find restored: Be A Host To Your Anemone | Reefland - Saltwater and Reef Aquarium Community

    Not exactly what we were looking for by at least it's by Dr. Ron and it's on Reefland.;;
