    I need marine invertebrate gametes

Does anyone have any invertebrates in their systems that spawn regularly? I am taking histotechnique and electron microscopy this semester and am working on an undergrad project dealing with marine invertebrate gametes, mainly sperm. As of now I have a few samples from Stomatella varia and Herpolitha limax. Both have been easy to get in my system but that's about all that I've seen. If I can ever catch it in time my Pocillopora damicornis has spawned and even produced a new young colony on the opposite side of the system but I have never seen it happen. The H. limax spawns sometimes monthly sometimes every other month usually around the 26'th.....this has been going on for about 8 months now and those samples have been easy to acquire. The S. varia.......I just got lucky one evening and happened to see it. It was neat...I noticed one broadcasting and then started to see more and more emerge from the rockwork and do the same. As I mentioned I'm looking for sperm but eggs could be of some use down the road. Fish sperm of any species could also come in handy although that's not the focus at this time. I will pay for shipping if anyone needs me to do so and will provide my address via pm if you can come through for me. Thank you.

Re: I need marine invertebrate gametes

If I were to sacrifice some of my own livestock for dissection who would I talk to in order to get the procedure down? I think I'm going to start with some Protopalythoa sp. since I have an abundance of them but I'm a little worried. From what I've read some colonies can be all female...some colonies are sterile at times and most of the time the female numbers greatly outweigh the males. I understand that some of them are hermaphrodites but I don't have a diagram of their anatomy to compare to should I choose to sacrifice a few polyps. Can anyone give me a run down of their anatomy and possibly the name of an up to date textbook on this subject? The procedures for dissecting various Cnidarians would be a huge help.
To date this is the best reference that I have and I have emailed the authors but haven't gotten a reply yet.

Chuck, get with MCSaxmaster over on Michigan Reefers - Michigan Reefers "Lets Talk Reefs" I'll bet you and he will hit it off right away! You may also want to contact "Kirbster" on the same board, he works at Preuss Animal house, and is the first TRUE expert I have found working at a LFS!

Sorry to send you off to another board for help, but I know one or BOTH of those guys would love to help out!
