    Newbie Question...

Hey guys im fairly new to starting a reef tank and was wondering if there was anything you needed to do to prep the live rock once you bought it before you put it in the tank. This is the rock i bought

    Fiji Totoka Premium Live Rock

and its going to be shipped to me so im guessing its out or water for atleast 3 days so is there anything i should do before i put it into my water?

    Thanks!!

The best thing you can do is get your skimmer jamming in a seperate aquarium with very high flow and let it sit there until what will die off has done so. You can cure it in your display this way if you absolutely have to.

How did you manage to get it shipped into Canada?
I was under the impression that they wouldn't ship over the border. Just curious since I'm in Canada also...

    Hi shaginwagon03,

If this is a new tank, with nothing else in the tank then put the rock directly in your tank and prepare for the Cycle.

    I'll second what Scott said

If you need help with a cycle, just ask weez, she just got done with the cycle in her newest tank. She ought to be able to give you the total lowdown.

One thing you may want to do before you get the rock in your tank is to give it a close look and scrub off any dead sponges and anything else that looks strange. You can also dip it in some saltwater that is really high in salinity, (above 1.03), to rid the rock of any unwanted critters like mantis shrimp.

haha they dont ship to Canada and I wouldnt get it shipped here anyways cause the taxes would be ridiculous for shipping over the border...My father has a few clients that live in the Buffalo area so I just get all my goodies shipped there and then I go pick it up and bring it over

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it!!

Are you buying cured live rock from a pet store? Uncured live rock is a LABOR and CASH intensive proposition! BE CAREFUL if you are a newbie!
