The best way to run a refugium imo is to gravity feed it to the display. You could build a small cabinet beside the display that the refugium could sit on top of. Secure the new cabinet with bolts to your old stand if you need to. This gives you more storage space for equipment as most stands don't have enough room. Have the tank drilled and an overflow put in it. Then simply put a pump in the display to feed the fuge and it will gravity feed back down. Then all you need is a light possibly a timer, some substrate and some macros.

Comparing fw tanks to sw tanks is like comparing apples to donkeys. To me, the only similarity is, you have to change water. How long have you been using ro for changes and do you use it all the time? We have laid down some fairly good advice here meat!!!!!

This is a horrible picture because my camera keeps dying and I'm in the process of working on some things. This gives you an idea of how my fuge is situated. It's definately pruning time.

I think they are nitrate factories, unless they are cleaned daily.

    You asked my opinion.

Now can I ask you a question?
How come you have let this brown diatom algae problem go on for a "year". Wasn't there an inkling that something was awry before this? There have been solutions offered here, and yet you continually want to fight them.

The phoslock isn't helping if it hasn't taken away the diatoms!!!!!!

More water movement to prevent dead spots in your tank, and a good funtioning skimmer, please listen to what has been offered.

im not fighting anything. the phoslock only removes phosphates not silicates. i think it is working since my phos level is 0. i havnt really had a bad problem with it because i always just left my lights off, but now that i want to start keeping coral my lights need to be on

    Re: brown algae

You are probably reading 0 for your phosphates, because it is all present in the algae. Actual readings of phosphates can really only be picked up by test kits that are better than yours and mine.

algae = excess nutrients in your system, that is a bottom line. I would love to give you a black and white answer, but there isn't one. All of us have been thru this, it is just that some of us took the steps necessary to eliminate the problems.
