Re: New to this forum

Hey Jim:

How long has this tank been set up? The only thing I would change is the skimmer, but that is my opinion.
The fact that you are barebottom almost demands that your skimmer be oversized for the tank. What is the flow in there? Hope you don't mind all the questions, but I did notice a bunch of algae on the glass in some of your pics.

Just trying to help

Re: New to this forum

Hey Guys,

Not sure of exactly what the flow of the system is. I have the sump (which is going to be replaced soon because I'm installing a refugium and taking out the wet/dry) but it is a Rio. I have 3 powerheads 1 of which is a brand new Koralia Pump1 and I am going to be adding the Koralia Pump2 in the next couple of days. the tank has been in operation for about 5 years now (give or take) I am not real worried about the algae on the glass because I have no background. I would just like to get rid of the green algae and have all coraline. So, what other thoughts are you having Charlie? I have been entertaining the thoughts of adding some arogonite into the system. Have to honest here. Over the years I have bounced back and fourth so many times about the substrate. I had it, took it out, put it in, took it out, etc. The main problem I have is; cleanliness. How do you keep the substrate clean. If all of that $hi... is collecting on the bottom of my tank in piles, then what happens when I put some live sand in there? What happens to the $hi...? Is it completely broken down by the bacteria in the sand? Keep in mind, I have been very seriously thinking about adding it back to the tank (just in the front section where it would be visible) again. Also, with time (and money of course) the Protein Skimmer will be changing and it will be going into the Refugium.

One thing I forgot to mention in my profile Under the "Animal" Section is:
Blue Leg Hermits (about 25)
Turbo Snails (2)

Zhenya, I am in South Jersey in Camden County. I am actually about 3 miles from the Walt Whitman Bridge and about 26 miles north of the Delaware Memorial. Lovely little town called Bellmawr.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Jim

Re: New to this forum

If it was me, I would clean the garbage up before adding sand. The garbage will stay as garbage, the sand may incororate it, but I would rather clean it up first.
I have always thought that with a BB tank, the flow has to be really good to keep all of the stuff you are talking about in suspension, so it either goes down the overflow, or the skimmer will pick it up.

Re: New to this forum

Exactly what I intend to do Charlie. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Going to do a "puff" cleaning. (Puff off all the junk settling on the rocks) Wait a day for all to settle and then vacuum the junk off the bottom. Once that is all done and I'm satisfied with how clean it is. Then I will be adding (probably 1 or 2 bags) of aragonite. I will not be putting it in the bark of the tank. I will be setting it all in the front and under the rocks in the front.

Then I am gonna wait a week or more and start working on the refugium. The refugium will be getting anywhere from 2 to 4 inches of aragonite, few peices of nice Fiji LR, and whatever vegetation I can rip out of my tank combined with what is available at the LFS.
