Lightbulb For those with Trachyphyllia...

When feeding, do you feed all of the "mouths" on the coral, just one, rotate?

I've had one for about 6 months, and have never really been able to find a wealthy sum of info on them. I have been feeding mine about once-twice a week (T. radiata), and was just curious as to peoples feeding methods and growths rates.

Also, mine tends to prefer processed foods (like formula one, angel formula...ect frozen meats) to that of fresh homemade food, that the fish and other coral seem to prefer.

Any thoughts and experiences welcome.

For those not familiar with the coral in question, there is a picture of SPASSE's T. radiata in the eye candy pics on the homepage of reefland.com, its the green "open-brain".

I never/rarely directly feed mine. But When I feed heavy= on my heavy feeding days it opens and catches alot of food. I've had it for @8yrs. It moves under the lr no matter if i put it toward the light. It expands and contracts till its under a nice shaded area. I just leave it there now. I keep it in the sand, dunno how its able to move with the point on the bottom but it does.

When I feed my open brains I usually feed several different mouths their own piece each time if they have more than one mouth.

My open brain has two distinct sides, connected only at the base.

I try to feed one or two mouths on either side, once or twice per week.

The growth of the OB has been great since I purchased it. It was drawn back and the skeleton was visible. The tissue had not receeded yet, but the coloration was poor and it was mostly white from the skeleton. Since purchasing it 4 months ago, it looks like a very healthy red and green open brain.

Perry,

Open brains apparently share nutrients “between mouths” and I never have noticed any lack of growth that I could attribute to which mouths were being fed. This would be my observation about elegance, and bubble corals also.

I feed mine 2 or 3 pieces of shrimp or silverside per week. I would estimate that my specimen has grown about 10-20% since I acquired it in late December. Not as much growth as my Plate corals which have almost doubled in size, but my Wellsophyllia radiata may be close to maximum size in any case.

Regards,

Scott Passe

Anyone know when they officially changed the genus or why?

It wasn't really that the genus was changed, but at first they thought that Trachyphyllia and Wellsophyllia were two different genus of corals. They were found to be the same, yet both names still exist in the hobby.

That's the way that I understood it. Don't worry.. if i'm wrong, someone will chime in. In the meantime I'll hunt down where I read it.
