    Winter Plans?

As we start getting into the colder months of the year, more people get excited about projects for the reef tanks. I was wondering, what is your planned projects for your tank this winter?

For us, we are planning on automating our top off process, and dosing kalkwasser top off to help maintain calcium and alk levels. Be on the look out for a detailed thread on this.

    So, let's hear it.

You've got more than a "project" on your plate. You'll have many I am sure once you get it all running; change this, tweak that, etc. You know how it is. As many others have said though, I am glad to see you getting back into the game.

    Re: Winter Plans?

My winter plans are dealing with more water chemistry than anything. I don't really have any upgrades to make on my system but I could at some point build a better stand. I finally got everything I need with the Nilsen reactor in place so equipment wise I'm good. Since I'll be inside more I plan on doing more water testing and log keeping as well as some added tlc to the equipment. This winter I'll also be really getting the reef at ASU going so that'll keep me pretty busy as well.

At some point I'm going to set up my sump... I've got everything I need, except the time. And, I've got to move my tank 1 inch away from my wall to fit the overflow...

Just tell your wife that having a tank teaches you all sorts of new DIY skills...which will save lots of money around the house...so you can buy more stuff for your tank...so you can learn more skills...

    Re: Winter Plans?

I need to figure out where this miserable micro bubbles come from. Never had them before but this past couple of weeks it's been a plague. I took skimmer offline thinking it could be the culprit but to no avail. I did replace my return pump but I didn;t do anything to the return line. It's been puzzling me.
    Kind regards,

    Gene.

Gene are you seeing any salt creep around any of the plumbing connections?

    Re: Winter Plans?

Sounds to me like the pump, especially if it is external.

    Re: Winter Plans?

I am expecting a large upgrade (from rapids pro trickle down thingy to Euroful sump with Mini-G skimmer, Mag pumps, 1/10 chiller, and 2x150 48" hamilton!)
Sump won't fit through the tiny cabinet doors, so we'll have to work around that!
I want to start a reef tank (what!?) well I want to actually start putting reef into tanks for the first time- my nano is ready as soon as it's newest occupants (true perc pair) are settled.
Will have to work on getting all paremters under control as well as algae blooms from our first real light.
By the time everything settles and I am ready to reef the big tank, winter will probably be almost gone!

Sorry about the microbubbles, Gene, how frustrating! Especially when they obstruct the view of such an amazing tank!

Scott, I finally gave up and switched to the quiet one, can't remember the number but it's output is slightly more than MAg 7. I use it as submersible.

Chuck, I see salt creep everywhere in the sump. All hoses and wires have it. One of my major peeves but I know it's because of the way my drain from the tank comes in. Makes tons of bubbles and now my Geo's skimmer that is kicking major arse is dumping a whole lot more in that small, maybe 30g sump. I finally gave up and put a small pad in one of the baffles to catch those pesky bubbles, seems to help alot.
One of this days I will have a sump that is bigger than display...
    Kind regards,

    Gene.

    Re: Winter Plans?

Depending on funds, I would like to redo the 300, but if that doesn't work out, I may end up retiring the 300, and setting up that 180 acrylic. It would be a little less work for me and the wife. I have plans drawn up for both, so we'll see what happens.
    Good thread Scott!!!!
