do more water changes... i had the same problem.. i finally found the culprate.. i really did have nitrates.. find yourself a low level nitrate tester. then test it. i used to use the regular testers and everything looked golden. bought that low level tester and the vial was red as hell! oh and i bought a new skimmer to combat it. put the new skimmer in and did a couple more water changes and i went to work later that day i came home and it had all died and gone away that afternoon.

Try to increase your Calcium and alkalinity levels. That seems to work with red slime.
Good Luck |

If you want a quick kill you can use a red slime killer like **** Boyds Chemi-Clean. It will kill the slime quite quickly but must be followed by a major water change to remove the dead slime and lower nutrient levels.
Something that I've used in my fish only tank is ALGONE it works over the period of several months but it elimnated red slime from the tank. See http://www.algone.com ------------------ "The octopus notices the little cowries." |

chemi-clean worked for me after I tried everything else.
I have aqua-c 150 had to do 3 water partials before it setteled down enough to start it up again. Man that stuff will make your skimmer go crazy. but I guess it lets you know that the chemi-clean is still in the water, and another partial is in order. chemi-clean gets the red out |

Are these products safe? do they kill the other "good" bacteria" in the tank? Is it an antibiotic? just some questions.

My 90 gallon reef has a horrible red slime problem this has been going on for more than a month..ph 8.2-8.3 salinity 1.025 temp 78-81 nitrite 0 nitrate 0 ammonia 0.. the red slime was just on the sand..I pull it out everyday..I've increased flow in the tank by 600gph I redirected a powerhead to blow behind the live rock(185lbs) now the red slime is allover the rocks..this is really really annoying me I pull it out every day it comes back everyday... Iam planning on doing maybe a 20-30gallon water change tommorow..Iam not sure of my phoshates since i don't test fo them..I supsect this all came about a few months back when my bta died I had an ammonia spike, I did a large like i think 40or45gallon water change to lower ammonia..I was gone the whole weekedn ended up losing a few corals when this happened..Now since that initial water change I'v ehad this water..I use ro I buy it from a local source Iam suspecting that maybe there filters in the sstems or something were dirty or something...Any suggestions this stuff is really getting the best of my tank..How can i remove this stuff from my rocks and everything???All fish are doing Great, both tangs are fat and healthy....Although I have noticed a few snail deaths..everything else seems to be doing ok.Any suggestions on what I should do next??

chemiclean is an awesome product and totally reefsafe..heres the update of what I've done tonight...Iam gonna probably order some chemiclean just in case...Anyone know of a goof phosphate test kit..I don't wanna buy a junky one..Dan
Update.. I went through and pulled out as much of it as I could and also used a maxijet to blow it off the rocks..then I pulled the rest out of the sump..Now there of course is still some in there at the same time I setup a kalk dripper(tupperware container with a IV drip) on the sump...I also added a big bag of carbon to the sump Iam planning on running this for about 5days.. I also mixed up 10gallons of salt water and am gonna do a water change tommorow..The tank looks better but we'll see in the morning it usualy comes back over night...thanks again for all the sesponses..Dan [This message has been edited by Bamm Bamm (edited 05-04-2001).] |

yea it will kill your red slime.... but does it kill the reason your getting red slime?? its called magic in a bottle. all it does is burn off the alge and kill it. but does that get rid of your nutrient problem? i was opted to do that also. but wouldnt you like to do it the right way? i mean by it going away means your water quality has improved also. kill it with chemicals and just the rotting of the alge will drive nitrates back up.. just my .02

trust me i know... the only things that were not coverd was the corals that were still alive. every day i cleaned the rocks off every day it was right back. it started on the sand and moved to the rocks then it was everywere. i justified buying a new skimmer that could keep up with the bioload for the huge headache it gave me daily!!!

I have a euroreef g2x I think it should be keeping up..One thing I don't have now that I will definately be correcting very shortly is that I have no caulerpa in the tank right now..I lost it all back when the amonia setin..I used to have a ton of caulerpa in my tank and everythgin used to be great I think after I add some more I should be better off...Dan

This works for us for cyno bacteria. Turn your lights off for two days, (a storm on the reef)and at the same time put new activated carbon in your filter every three or four days three or four times in a row. Sometimes it works with only one day with the lights off. Take care, Terry

thanks for the idea..I decided after being disgusted with my tank today with all the new cyano after I spent an hour pulling it out yesterday to use the chemiclean hopefully it will work..I will also keep doing all the necessary things to put everything how it should be mostly adding a bunch of caulerpa again... I just am disgusted with the tank and especially since it's in the front room of a very expensive house it pisses me off even more that its been looking like crap..So Iam hoping all will be well.I know the chemiclean if reef safe I've used it before with great uscess I was just trying to get away without using it..
