Re: Little Creature - does he need food?

I have used Wikipedia for a wide variety of information and research and I have found them to always be spot on, I don't know how they do it, but they're good :-)

But back to my Mantis, I have dipped ALL of my live rock in freshwater and did not get him :-( But I did get a cute little crab you can see here ID on crab?. I know there are two kinds of mantis, a spearer and a clubber, do any of them live in the substrate? When I sighted him before I was sifting out large grain sand. My nitrates have been kind of high lately (~20 ppm), is it possible he passed?
    Regards,

I doubt it's passed. It's probably either really lodged in your live rock or in the substrate.

If you mean under the sand, no. He's probably hiding out in your live rock somewhere.

    ...is it possible he passed?
Not likely. Just add a few snails to your tank and then wait for nighttime and listen carefully for a clicking sound. That would be your mantis shrimp busting open a snail's shell.

If you want to observe your tank at night, you need to have the room completely dark and use a red flashlight (astronomy light) or you can use a regular white flashlight and cover the lens with red cellophane.

Just as a side note, for kicks, I went to Wikipedia and typed "reef aquarium" into the search. According to Wikipedia, reef aquariums have "clorinating" fish in them...lol.

It was probably written by an LFS employee.
