Base rock/ocean rock

I'm just wanting to no if it is alright to add base rock to an 8 month old tank with out any problems.
I would like to fill the middle section of my tank right up, as it looks a bit bear seeing the glass. and at ?2 kilo instead of ?10 would be alot kinder on the pocket.
If it is possible will it eventually become live (don't think it quite as porouse as live rock though) and do nearly as good a job as the rest. If so how long will it take........

Re: Base rock/ocean rock

Any live rock, including so-called "base rock," can be added to the tank at any time provided it is fully cured. If it is not fully cured, you must cure it first before adding it to an established tank.

Base rock is usually placed under the 'good' stuff, which is how it got its name. All live rock functions the same and all will get better with age in your aquarium; however, "you get what you pay for" applies here.

Are you serious about £10 ($20) for 'good' live rock and £2 ($4) for base rock? That's really high compared to what we pay over here on this side of the pond. We would pay about £1 for base and about £2 for the good stuff if ordering online. Prices in the local aquarium shop might run double that amount but nowhere near what you're paying.

Dept. of Corrections:

Never mind!!! I just realized you're talking about kilos instead of pounds. So that means you're paying $9.09/lb for the good stuff and $1.82/lb for base rock. That's about the same as what LFS over here might charge retail for people buying just a few pounds at a time.

We still haven't converted to metric over here, so we don't price anything by the kilo. Yet.

Re: Base rock/ocean rock

half way down that i message i visioned my self moving over there just for the price of rock... Glad were not getting ripped off to much.
The rock i was intending on getting is still nice shapes and sizes, with plenty of holes and crevises in it, and i'm hoping to get star xenia growing all over it any way so it will be covered up......
think i might go for it.....
