Cleaning MJ Powerheads??

How often should I clean my MJ 1200's. They are controlled by a Wavemaster Pro. The algae build up on the outside of them is pretty good right now. Should I clean them monthly, weekly, what?

Thanks,
Ryan

IF it's coralline on the outside, I just clean them enough to keep the intake strainer clean and the impeller free and clear, I only worry about algae on the outside if it's hair algae. I like purple power heads. HTH

hehe....I like purple, pink, green, and yellow PH's myself Gimme all that coralline!....I have some pesky algaes that tend to want to clog the intakes sometimes, I just carefully remove the intake grate and put it in a net so as to not have all that algae stirring around in my tank and then I just clean the grate off in some hot water in the sink then replace it. I can visibly see the current in my tanks and I have had to clean my PH's maybe once in a year as long as I keep the grates clean once every month or two. Also I have heard that if you are dripping Kalk right above a PH that it will lessen the life of that PH becuz of the calcium buildup.....If this is the case then you might want to take it out every month or so and run the powerhead in some vinegar for a couple of hours then rinse it VERY good and run it in hot water for a couple more hours, that should take care of alot of calcium deposits. HTH
