My yellow tang has been repeatedly swimming into the vicinity of the cleaner shrimp, pointing its nose to the top of the aquarium, and sweeping the sand with its tail. Is it begging the shrimp for a cleaning? The shrimp doesn't seem at all interested. I have looked closely at the tang and don't see any signs of ich (although the tang had it 2 months ago.) Could the fish have ich without outward signs of it? Is there any way I can encourage the shrimp to do his job? Or is this strange behavior something else altogether?

I don't think your tang's behavior means he wants to be cleaned. I think it's more like the fish saying, " Here I am and this is my territory and I'm just a wonderful fish and don't you forget it."
Both my tangs, powder blue and hippo, sometimes do sand swishing with thier tails. The hippo also has a funny little dance he does with his nose straight up. My maroon clown does that all the time; of course, she's doing a little housekeeping. Her action is deffinately breeding-homemaking related. If your tang had any parasites to clean he could probably talk the shrimp into doing its job.
