I've been told that these eels are very difficult to keep in captivity as they refuse to eat. Live feeder fish are necessary to trigger their appetites. They are definitely not as hardy as the Gymnothorax...Gary

Gary, is correct, IMO, you will be spending $$ on a doomed fish and then your LFS will replace it with another doomed fish. There used to be a guy at Aqualink (2 years ago) who had one, his screen name was Blueribboneel. He would catch the eel once or twice a week and shove food down its throat. Hmmmmmmm, I wonder what happen to that guy.

I also think these are beautiful, but I have heard that they will leave the tank if they can find a opening. The LFS had one a few months back and they put glass over the top to keep him in. I thought he was so awesome that I went back that evening to look at him again. Just a few hours later and he had found an opening and was missing. At first I thought they had sold him so I asked. He had climbed out and laying behind the tank. He didn't make it. I decided I couldn't mess with worrying about that.

I wouldnt get one but I've if you really want one you need a really large tank with a deep sand bed. Also there has to be no holes any size anywhere in the hood.

Hey all just wanted to give you all an update. This morning when feeding the rest of the tank, the eel ate some of the frozen shrimp and some scallop. He was eating at the store, so hopefully this is a good thing. The tank in covered too, so hopefully he will stay in the tank.

How long would you say he is? Looks to me to be about 26" or so??? Based on the picture, it looks like he has just recently started changing from the juvenile coloration to the male coloration.
