    Question Cementing overflo tubes?

    Hello All,

In the process of setting up a 90g reef-ready tank and I'm having a leakage problem with the drain tube where it enters the bulkhead. The return tube is pressure fitted into its bulkhead and does not leak. I've been told by LFS that cementing them in place should not be necessary that a good pressure fit should work. The overflo kit instructions say nothing about cementing nor does it mention how high/low the drain assembly should be. Help please.

    Hi Bill,

It may require cementing and although not desired, will not hurt anything to do so. The only problem is if you ever need to dismantle the overflow. As far as height, I like for the pipes input to be about 2" below the slots in the overflow box.

    Re: Cementing overflo tubes?

Thanks Scott for the quick response. I guess I'm being anal when it comes to leaks of any capacity. Someone had suggested I use teflon tape, we'll see. Another said that once slime, etc develops the leak will probably stop on its own and before it does the leaking water will drop into the sump below anyway. I do understand the need to remove the durso tube so do you think cementing the reducing connector to the bulkhead would be okay as I'd still have the option to remove the durso asm?

Yeah I think cementing any/all of it will be fine with the exception of needing to remove it for any reason.

    Re: Cementing overflo tubes?

I actually cemented/solvent welded my durso pipe, that I created, together, except for the bottom part that goes into my bulkhead fitting. That solved my problem. Mine was initially leaking as well and even though it seemed like everything fit together nice and tight, it was still leaking water into the sump until I welded it.

    All better now. LOL
