protein skimmer question

Just recently bought an oceanic skimmer. Just wandering if i'm operating it properly. The instructions are kind of vague. So do I want the bubbles just popping into the cup or spilling into it. The skimmer is about a week old and is getting a lot of yellow/brown water but no solid waste. Thanks

Re: protein skimmer question

I am not familiar with that skimmer but maybe this will help. You don't want the bubbles spilling over the rim of the cup constantly or it will overflow within minutes and not be effective.

Every skimmer brand I've used has varied on where to set the bubble line in the riser tube. You will have to just try it out for a while until you are producing the skimmate you are aiming to produce. Keep in mind that skimmers require some time to break in and run properly.

The higher in the cup you set the bubble level the more wet you are said to be skimming. It will look like green water. At the lowest setting you can dial in and still get skimmate you are skimming dry. Should be a thick dark smelly mud around the top interior of the cup. There has been debate on which is better but I tend to set my skimmers in the middle of the range which for me is usually half way up the riser tube in the collection cup on ASM and EuroReef skimmers. I have a prizm laying around that if I recall correctly needed to be set higher in the riser tube to be effective.

Re: protein skimmer question

I run mine dry and the wife hates it after about 3 days I run it 22hr-7days a week and just add stronium and other additives. You should defently watch it since its only a week old took my coralife 2 weeks to dial in then i had a mess until i twiked it to where i needed it. good luck.
