So my daughter decided to re-start her reef tank again but has sold everything she had except the 50 gallon tank. No sump.
What is the difference in HOT skimmers? I have a Aqua-C remora Pro that I really happy with but she never liked her Remora because it never really pulled anything out of her tank. So other choices would be: CPR BAK PAK: CPR Bak-Pak 2R+ (Reef) Protein Skimmer Coralife: Coralife Super Protein Skimmer (Needle wheel) - up to 125 Gallon Anyone have either of these? Also she doesn't have a fortune to spend so the more expensive options are not options! ![]()

Re: The usual hum drum skimmer questions
Weez,
Given the choices I would personally go with the needle wheel design. It will need to be played with to adjust properly so it skimms well (water levels in the riser chamber). I had an old Turboflotor years ago, and I liked it but it leaked like crazy and needed to be in the sump. Today's designs are much better. Mind you, I never used Coralife skimmer and simply comment on the design options. AquaC Remora is still my choice for the tanks up to 50-60g, you just need to adjust it properly to do what you want it to do. ![]()

Yup, that's what I was thinking too, I'm gonna try to convince her to get another one, I know I still love mine and two years it's still working really hard!

I am gonna second Gene's choice. Once I got my Remora Pro dialed in, I have never touch it. I think they are great skimmers for that size system.

well there you go! That's 3 against one and if I make her read these I'm sure she'll change her mind!

Re: The usual hum drum skimmer questions
I never got to try the Remora Pro, but that's what I would have picked (if I could) due to reading all the good stuff here about them.
However, I did go with the Super Skimmer 220g - Needle wheel one. It's worked fine thus far and I do get stuff in the cup, for sure. I've been asking questions about it lately (posts are on Reefland) because I thought it was only skimming so much and stopping (so to speak...not really, but I only seemed to get so much in the cup and that was it), but I found out that I didn't exactly have it set right and since have been playing with the flow settings and it's workin' great now. I'm not saying it's better than the Remora Pro, but it definitely is working, because alllll kinds of smelly gunk is comin' out of that thing! LOL Plus, my water has been staying crystal clear.
