Microbubble Question

Quick question- my skimmer is releasing a lot of microbubbles into the tank- can these bubbles harm sps corals? if so, does anybody know of a good DIY bubble trap? Thanks.

Re: Microbubble Question

Micron sock under skimmer outflow worked good for me. DIY from Coralife 100 micron filter pads.

Re: Microbubble Question

If i were you i would first try to see why you have said bubbles. In my tank i only get the skimmer letting out micro bubbles when i either: have my arm in the tank too long (oils in your skin break surface tension), touch the inside of the skimmer cup when cleaning (which ive yet to do, i just rinse it with hot water), or have the air/water ratio is not set properly.

Do you have a sump?

Is your your overflow down pipe ribbed on the inside or smooth pvc? I read somewhere that using "ribbed" (cant think of the proper term) tubing and curving it slightly can help reduce micro bubbles on entry to the sum. (all assuming you even have a sump)

Re: Microbubble Question

Thanks for the info- Funny you should mention a micron sock- it worked well, but not for the same reason- I took the Pre-filter sponge off the intake because it was taking up quite a bit of space, and without any form of machanical filtration, I decided to add a micron sock to the outflow to catch any debree that the skimmer didn't get. One solution to two problems- thats the meaning of reefkeeping.

Re: Microbubble Question

ps- soon after I added the sock, the skimmer stopped kicking out bubbles anyway.
