Talking A face only a momma can love!

I went to my coral store today and picked up a small frag but at the same time I took a pic of one of his resident fishies, dang she's ugly in a cute sort of way!

Yes they would, isn't she a cutie!

Here's an actinic shot of the same coral:
can anyone give me a better ID than sinularia? as in Sinularia " ??? "
I was told these are quite hard to come by in this color. As you can see, it's very green with pinkish beige polyps.
It's a little blurry but you get the picture...

Re: A face only a momma can love!

Louise,

It is Sinularia sp. most likely, other than that it would be pretty much impossible to identify it to species level. One needs to examine spicules within the tissue and compare them to a known set to be sure.

Your picture of the clownfish reminds me of mine, the same mean looking mug.

Re: A face only a momma can love!

Hi Gene,

Dang she looks grumpy huh? She isn't mine though, she belongs to Steve at the coral shop I go to.

About the Sinularia he told me that this particular is getting really rare and very hard to come by so I was curious and hoping to look it up on the net. When I did a search for green sinularia, they all come up very pale green, more like white with a slight green tinge so I figured if I had a better name to search with I would have less trouble finding it.

Re: A face only a momma can love!

Louise,

It used to be pretty popular soft coral and I saw plenty of it in my LFS about 9-10 years ago. I haven't seen it as much lately, so yes, perhaps your LFS guy is right that it is becoming somewhat rare.
What exactly are you searching for in regards to this coral?

Louise,

According to Eric Borneman in his book Aquarium Coprals, this corals are quite hardy and tolerant to different lighting and flow schemes. Generally, bright light and moderate to strong flow is the norm for this corals. Strong but not direct water flow should be helpful especially at the time when this coral is shedding it;s most outer layer of tissue, called tunic. Very much like the Sarcophyton corals do (since they belong to the same family ).

Also, they grow very large if conditions are favorable. I had a cream colored pulsing Sinularia that grew to a large colony within a year's span. I have some images in my galley, I believe.

Re: A face only a momma can love!

Thanks Gene!
My daughter has the white with green tinge and it's already grown since she got it so I guess they are about the same then!
