Nitrogen cycles tend to take 4-8 weeks, your nitrates are up im sure and thats a cause of the algae. Do you use RO or DI water for your source? that could be part of your problem as well.

is that a ricordia i see? i doubt you should have much live stock in a tank that new.

my opinions only~

I agree, your problems are probably caused by the amount of livestock added way too fast. Tangs make a big mess and most are picky with different algaes. Some looks like hair algae and some like bryopsis and I don't think tangs like either one, at least not mine. You may have added your fish too quickly

Re: Algae Red Slime Others?

Hi Tommy,

Do not put any medications in your tank. It is totally unnecessary in a newly established tank. Red slime removing potion is nothing but antibiotic that is designed to kill the bacteria( which is what red algae is, it is not algae at all but a cyanobacteria), and the problem is it may kill some beneficial bacteria as well. Your tank is very new and is going through a succession of algae blooms, which is evident in your pictures.
The reason you can;t detect any nitrogen is because it is up taken by the various algae. And it is quite normal in the new tanks, and we all gone through it. Stay with your water changes and make sure to use purified water, like RO/DI, so that you do not fuel your algae more with the water changes.
Here's a link to an interesting article on to how avoid algae problems.

Yes RO/DI or at least RO would make a big difference. Most LFS will tell you only what you want to hear!

Re: Algae Red Slime Others?

What size is your tank? It's looks awfully small for a tang. You may want to reconsider that purchase.

Re: Algae Red Slime Others?

I agree with those who posted that tap water is part of the algae problem. When I started my tank up I had a major algae problem, I drained my tank and refilled it with RO water and started over, now everything has been great to this date.
