convert a wet/dry

Hey, I have been using a wet/dry since I setup the tank a bit over 3 months ago. What I am planning to do is switch over to a sump. Until I can have made/buy a sump, can I temporarily alter the wet/dry as a sump? Like take out the bio-balls and eggcrate?

If so how would I go about this? The only livestock in the tank currently are 5 turbo & 4 cerith snails.

Thanks for any help.

Re: convert a wet/dry

I would remove the media and eggcrate and let it be since all you have is just snails. Although, removing handful at the time, like a week intervals, would be safer way to go. When I did this I just dumped half of the media out during water change and then another half at the next month's water change. My NO3 levels subsided and eventually became undetectable in about 2 month after that.

Thanks Gene, that is what I was wondering about. If to remove the media all at once or in stages.

I think with your bioload you can probably remove all of it at once and be done with it. Just wait few more weeks and check your water parameters before adding any fish or coral.
