this sucker almost slipped by
me tonight as I gazed in my dad's nano. I have read plenty about Aiptasia sp. and not sure if this is what this is. I hope not...
It is translucent, has a "tube" in the center, with tentacles on the side. What is it?? I found it on the side of a small rock and lifted it up to discover more of "it" and on the rock adjacent to it.

I couldn't get a good shot of the tube, but it is the large white blur in the middle of the mass (in the pics). To me, the hole is slightly smaller than the tube itself. It's maybe 3/8th's inch in height and 1/8 in diameter. Kinda looked like a tube worm/feather duster forming at first...

I would guess a type of sponge. There are so many varieties though.

Thanks for the info guys. It would be nice to be a sponge and not something "weed" like.
 Though it definitely looks like a mass of tentacles. What variety has a description like that? I am having no luck finding good pics online to reference.

I'm not even positive it's a sponge. That's why I linked to the diagram of sponge anatomy for you to check it out. A lot depends on the description of the "tube" as you call it.
I'm leaning towards some sort of sponge but it might be some sort of hydrozoan. I can't see well enough to make out what it is.

I agree on the sponge identification. I had similar sponges growing on my rocks before, however this type of sponge don't persist for any length of time.

Update: I re-checked the rocks this thing was attached to today and saw it has grew in size. About 3-4x it's original size and is now on 2 other adjacent rocks. :/ So I grabbed my camera and got much better pics in-case someone may id this.
    It is looking like a weed at this point and might have to take some sort of action before the tank is over run!
