Food Options
Hi Everyone,
Over the weekend I tried to get some frozen silversides, mysis, and or clams to feed my new brain coral. Well all of the LFS that I go to did not have any of the above! I asked over at P.A. about these items but it is a little too hot at the moment and it might not be very cost effective for me to only get two or three frozen food items shipped next day to me. So I turn to you, the board. Is there anything I can I get a the local supermarket to feed me brain until I can get some real food for it? Thanks, CaptK |

CaptK,
I buy raw squid, shrimp and clams from my local grocer to feed my anemones. Basically I will buy a bag of the frozen and uncooked seafood assortments for chowders or other meals (these can be found in the frozen foods cases generally). These work really well over the long haul as I just thaw what I need as I need it. If I feel like treating my reef I will buy fresh shrimp or scallops from the fish counter. Maybe this might work for you? Also, I know they are bad for everything else but I buy silversides and brine shrimp occasionally from Petsmart or Petco. Although I hate to give them my business they are one of only two places in my area that I know carry silversides on a regular basis. HTH, Greg |

What about the canned clams at the grocery store, are they any good?
And would the need any special preparations? Thanks Again, CaptK |

That's a good idea too. The only thing I would worry about with canned items would be the liquid they are soaked in (water, oil, does it have preservatives, etc.). I guess small traces of metal could leech from the cans into the liquid if it is caustic enough too?
I suspect however if you rinsed the clams a bit before feeding they would be ok. The true test is will your fish or corals eat/accept them. Let me know if it seems to work!! Thanks, Greg |
