    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

the first two would make me think typical bristle worms, but that last one with the part pointing up and to the right has the flat dark middle area between the bristles characteristic of a fire worm.

    does he look like that?

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

It might be, Its hard to tell from that pic, I will have to observe that chunk of rock and see if I can get a better photo to compare, they are kinda orange in color on there back and some are white, all my rock is gulf aquaculture rock, and the live sand also came from the gulf, I can drop shrimp pellets onto the sand bed and watch them come out to eat, it's pretty cool to watch, thats why I kinda hoping their cool to keep, and won't harm the fish, I'm careful if I gotta move rock, got some rubber gloves just for the tank, so I'm pretty safe.

    Tanks,
    Robert

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

No need to panic, Robert. It does not look like a Hermodice carunculata, or the dreaded bearded fireworm found in the Caribbean and similar species found in Indo-Pacific as well. Their body color typically reddish to silver-grey without any dark stripes. They could as well be distinguished by the presence of red frilly gills above each tuft of bristles and presence of frilly appendages (the beard) on the back of the head.

I think what you have in there is more common in the hobby bristle worm, perhaps Eurytoe complanata. They are beneficial scavengers and I would just leave them alone. Their population rise and fall with the food sources, so try not to overfeed. ;)

PS. I'm leaving in a second so I can't give you any links to peruse about the worms, but when I get home I will be glad to post some for you.
    Kind regards,

    Gene.

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

Charlie, Gene, Mike, and anyone else listening,

Seem to have developed a small problem here.

Tested my water the other day, noticed ph was about 7.8, this was just after the lights came on, waited about 3 hours, repeated test, same results, yesterday I did a 15 gal. water change, figured this would solve the issue, however after testing a short while ago with the lights being on for approx. 4 hours, I still have the same reading. Everything looks normal, but I've always been around 8.2 - 8.4, the only change I made is I figured I'd try Oceanics blend of salt mix vs. Instant Ocean. I am currently at 1.025, mixed it a little stronger than instructions say to, but prefer the higher reading. No ammonia, nitrates are neg. less than 10 ppm.

Just the ph is whacked, anybody got any idea's about this change

Temp is constant at 80 degrees, can't get the house any cooler than that.

    Help

    Tanks,
    Robert

Robert, your water temperature is fine, no need to sweat the bullets and drive your electric bill any higher than it is. 80-82 degrees is just about perfect.

As far as your Ph goes, you haven't listed your alkalinity or the Ca. You may also check into the CO2 problem due to the house being completely sealed off (A/C running and such ;) ) Take your test water and try aerating it for a tad and then check, if Ph is normal than you need to get some better water movement at the very top of your tank. Or, see if you can bring some of the outside air in...

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

    Charlie, Gene, and everyone.

Took a water sample to the lfs up the road, he checked alk, ph, and ca, told me everything was in acceptable range, didn't try to sell me anything, so I kinda believe him.

Gene, gonna try your idea about the water and the co2, I get the idea of what you mean, but believe me this old trailer is far, far, far from sealed up tight, but I do get your drift, will check it out and report back later today.

    Thanks Guys,

    Tanks,
    Robert

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

P.S. reference above post, I will be obtaining the 2 above mentioned test kits, alk and ca. (assuming ca refers to calcium) this week, need to have them.

Also, Charlie I know I told you I wouldn't be adding anything to the tank because of the pending move, but my local frag guy just sent me an e-mail for some really nice ric. at a price I can't turn down, will be getting them tomorrow around 6 my time, so if they settle down nicely you'll get your pics tomorrow night if not you will have to wait till thursday when you return from work. I'm getting one each of the following:

orange/purple or orange/yellow, a blue/purple and a green/orange for 45 cash. This is the same guy that I was talking to you about fragging the hammer coral he has.

    Tanks,
    Robert
