    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

You may want to move them to an area with a little more flow Robert. IMO
Just keep a real close eye on that exposed flesh, definitely an area for concern!!!!

Moved, what should I be looking for, they have polyps all up and down the split, fully extended I think, I've got some cars to do this morning when I get in I take a couple pics and post, that way you got a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Do a little bit of searching around for Brown Jelly disease Robert, that is what I would be most concerned about.

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

    Charlie,

Heres a couple pics of the hammer and the split I was talking about, I've got the smaller piece flesh side down, that is proably the piece I will be most likely to lose, as it's remaining skeleton is not very stable.

The bigger piece you can see polyps all down the front, but it is in good shape and I believe this one will make it, did find some reading material on brown jelly diease and am sorting through it all.

    Anyway heres the pics

    Tanks,
    Robert

    Oh, Tim,

I bought this frag Thursday and I didn't notice till I got it home that it's skeleton was damaged, actually fractured, so Charlie and I have been trying to figure out the best way to proceed. I can only hope mine will heal and look as good as yours, Nice shot by the way

    Hey chefbenry,

Welcome to Reeflands, there are some really good people here that will help you out. Feel free to ask, and welcome to my thread, most of the time we do talk about reef tanks here, but occasionally we do get a bit side tracked, Just ask Charlie.

Anyway as I said welcome, I recommend browsing, reading and asking lots of questions, I never been steered wrong here except for the "crunchberries" episode, don't ask about that, it's safer that way.

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

You really don't need to worry corals or alot of inverts. eating you feather dusters and sponges, now there are several fish that will, there are alot more knowledgable people here than me, I just really learning about reef tanks myself, started with a 14 bio-cube, grew into a 55. Read alot of the other threads, use the search window for specific questions or just puruse and you will undoubtably find what you are looking for.

Haven't given up on the kids camera idea, stuck my memory card in it and it wants to format, I need to research this before dumping the card for formatting, I've got some stuff on there that I need.

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

    Charlie,

You and Gene were dead b@#$'s accurate on the co2 issue, tried what Gene had suggested, sucked out 1.5 gallons, yanked the k2, dropped it in the bucket, let it run for about an hour, tested ph, guess what? 8.2 - 8.4. Let me know when you get in, got a probably insane idea I want to run by you, it might work and I am on a severe budget crisis at the moment so if you think this might work I'm gonna try it.

    Tanks,
    Robert

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

8" dia. pvc pipe with a quarter cut out, I've got enough containers to hold 90 - 100 percent of tank water, silicone above mentioned pvc pipe to corner of tank, notched of course to create a sudo-overflow, put powerhead from garbage skimmer in bottom of said overflow, run through garbage skimmer(thus creating the worlds smallest sump), extend return to get away from overflow, do you think this would create enough surface movement along with the k2 kicking the surface to solve co2 issue?

    Robert

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

Why don't you just try and see if your LFS has some powerheads that they aren't using and use them to break the surface tension? Even a small maxijet pointed at the surface will help Robert.
That sounds like an awful lot of work to do what a powerhead will do.

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

I've got the powerhead from the skimmer blowing at the surface, I get decent movement to about the center point, I've got the k2 that normally blows down and across for the lower area's. I can use that for now and try to hussle up another powerhead for the surface and then move the k2 back to it's org. job

    Robert

    Re: Parrothead's 55 gallon Reef

    This is interesting...

Your "garbage skimmer"...can you get the pump down low in the tank and draw from there instead of your 8" PVC overflow? I'm thinking you need more bottom to top water movement. Does your good skimmer just empty across the top?

What I'm thinking is if you get some circular motion going across the bottom up, one side, across the top, down the other side, then across the bottom again, then you might have better air exchange. If i remember right, and I'm too lazy to read back in the thread, you have two powerheads pointing at each other to "crash" in the middle...try changing your flow pattern to a circular one and see what happens.
