sorry about bad language there people.

i have been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out why i can't keep anything alive in my tank, testing over and over, trying to adjust things i think could be the issue to no avail.

then i wonder why my heater doesnt seem to be working proplerly (marine land visitherm) keeps going on and off while its set at 82 my digital thermometer says 78 and its kicking off..... i figured i had a busted heater and had to hold it at 89 to get my digital thermometer to read 80.2

so it hits me.....test the thermometer...(when i was a chef we calibrated meat thermometers in a glass of icewater to 32 degrees) i pop it in the water and it reads me the ice water is 24 degrees..............

so i shove my meat thermometer in the tank........90 degrees.....................................

i'd say its human error, but your supposed to be able to trust thermometers you buy.

i triple checked my meat thermometer by putting it under my arm pit with a oral "sick" thermometer and both came up 98.8 and the meat therm reads 8 degrees above the coradeath therm.

wow, I was actually thinking of getting a digital thermometer. I guess you get what you pay for huh? Thanks for the tip of checking it with a glass of ice water. I'd think that along with checking boiling water would test both extremes...if they went to 212F or 100C.

There was a warning on my digital thermometer that it could be +5 to -5 degrees off.

I have the same thermometer and it's about 3 degrees off too. I have a glass one in there too to compare readings.

theres always a bright side to things, i dont have to buy a new heater now, its working fine (thought its thermostat was broken)

i apologize for the original title, i had a few beers and was mad, i tested the 3 thermometers again today in warm water to be sure, medicine therm 107.8 ... meat therm 108.... coralife 95.5

thanks for the info, checked mine and it was 4 degrees off. instead of 83 it was reading 79 JUNK
