Coral I.D. Please (Pict included)
Hi All,
I cannot believe that this has been in my tank for a few months and I never new that it was some type of coral. That was until I looked into the tank in the wee hours of the night with a flashlight and saw long tentacles coming from this. I know what the yellow leather is. I am looking for an ID on the disk like things behind it. Granted I am expecting my Aquarium Corals: Selection,Husbandry....... by Eric H. Borneman book today and it probably has this in it. But this gives me a chance to show off ![]() |

It's hard to see. Is it Calaustrea furcata, Trumpet coral?

Thanks Tcook,
They do look similiar to that. But that picture shows those corals with, what looks like, a stem attached to them. Mine lay flat on the rock. Can trupmet corals not have stems?? Thanks CaptK |

Looks like a favites (moon coral) to me, Caulastrea's do have to have stalks. I'd move the leather, maybe it'll grow faster for you. JMHO

I actually got the yellow leather and it came on the rock with this mystery coral.
Until a few days ago I thought that this mystery coral was just part of a cool looking rock. I am not sure I would want to remove anything for fear of me killing one of these corals. Thanks for the input, CaptK |

I gotta agree that this looks like a moon coral. It does seem to lie flat or doesn't have the branches that caulastreas' have. I used to have one and at night it also extended it's sweeper tentacles. Nice coral!!

CaptK,
If the centers of the craters are green, then I feel pretty safe in saying that it is Favites abdita. Often, leathers come in attached to rocks that have this species coming along for the ride. So of course conditions for both corals is quite similar indeed when considering placement in your system. Hopefully the LFS did not get you for a combo priced piece Now you are one up on them.Duncan.
