Can anyone recommend a good place to pick up 2 small queen conchs for my 30 gallon tank? Thanks.

Rudeboy,
Premium Aquatics. Toward the bottom of the list, they've got 50 in stock. http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merch..._Code=Weeklist

Rudeboy,
Yep, mile marker 99 in Key Largo, oceanside, right off the end of the pier with the huge sailboat. Sorry, I had to say it Seriously though, I've also heard that premium, and ffexpress have them. HTH.Duncan.

Thanks a lot guys. I've watched these in my LFS (which hasn't had any for sale in a while) and they seem to move across the sand bed pretty slowly. They don't even appear to be alive at times. But, I've heard they do a great job. Do they move more at night or under actinic lights?

I have two 1" queen conchs which I purchased from Premium Aquatics . They graze constantly, and they supposedly eat red slime too, although I haven't noticed any decrease in the red stuff on my sand.
PA recommends one conch per 25 gallons. |

I checked out their website today and I'm about 10 minutes from odering from them. My only concern is.... I've NEVER ordered livstock through the net before and I'm a little hesitant about it. Wht did you pay for the conch and shipping and what condition was it in when you got it?

As I recall, I paid about $6 per conch. I also ordered several snails and shrimp with that shipment, and had them sent by FedEx Overnight shipping. All livestock arrived alive and healthy.
I think the shipping (plus the container) for my order was about $32, for a total of about $70. |

Point of clarification:
The queen conch is Strombus gigas; it reaches a maximum length of 6-12". Strombus maculatus, another gastropod of the Family Strombidae, reaches a maximum length of 1/2". Ninong ![]()

Strombus gigas is what I'm interested in. Man, $32 just for shipping for a $6 item? You know, all of a sudden waiting a week for my LFS to get them doesn't sound so bad.

I am lucky that our area is served by a great LFS considering how rural we are. However, if I want specific corals, fish, etc., I have to order them and have them shipped. I usually try to order several creatures at once to cut down on the shipping/creature costs.

Sounds like a smart move. My problem is that I'm so impatient. I've only been involved in reefing for 5 months and once I see a small amount of color on my sand, I flip. So, I end up needing to have a solution right away. Know what I mean? My LFS has a lot of great stuff, and, since I'm starting to buy from them a lot more, I get some great deals.

Hey RudeBoy:
Not to turn this into a chat room, but I just looked at your web site, and you have some very nice photos. Beautiful tank and rock work! I'm curious if you've had any problems with nitrates with only 1/2-1" of sand in your bed. Does it seem adequate, or do you have some other form of filtration? |

Thanks a lot for the compliments. My tank has changed a lot. I have some good growth. Believe it or not, I have 0 nitrates, my skimmer (CPR Bak Pak) is the BOMB! It works really well. I have a lot of feather dusters and amphipods and all kinds of crap growing. My LFS was very shocked at how well my tank has grown in the first 5 months. I've never had problems with a lack of nutrients or anything like that. Keep checking my site, I'll be adding new pics tonight. I had to start taking them with my webcam because my digital broke. And, using my Advantix sucks because I can't get film fastewr than 400 for it. The pics always come out blurry. I should have my webcam broadcast setup by the end of the weekend.

yes paying 32 for a 6 dollar item is rediculous however it is better to buy a few things at the same time or put a pool order together. the idea is to fit as much stuff in there shipment box as possible. this than becomes way cheaper than a lfs. premium aquatics is a very reliable vendor with great prices. i usually order 7-8 things than you only pay for 1 shipping cost. this usualy works out quite cheaper than local bought....

Where did you get your conchs from for $2.99? Has anyone ever seen Black Turbo Snails? I was told that they're from the Mexico region. Well, I bought 6 of them today to see what they do... well, they are doing a serious number on my sandbed and LR! I had a little algae grwoth in my new 10g reef from leaving the lights on too long... well, not anymore. I put them in there and within 3 hours, they were gettin' busy. I only put 3 in the 10g and they're doing pretty well. I put the remaining 3 in my 30g and plan on going to my LFS tomorrow to pick up about 10-15 more. May not even have a need for the conchs.
