Question for the Acro pros out there ?

Got two acros a month ago, small peices. They are doing awesome in my opinion ! I notice a lot of people have them butting right next to other acros and corals. Do they not have any ill effects to other corals and to themselves ?? Just curious because I think I found something I really like !!!

Hey Snoop,
In my experience sps's will sting each other if kept too close to each other. I have many acroporas that are within 1" of another with no ill effects. BUT, you have to prune them back once in a while or they will touch and usually die where they meet. The only exception that I know of is if the two corals were fragged from the same mother colony. That thought did rise when I was reading a Sprung book I have. I noticed that there was just an Acropora section and nothing too specific in the species. They seem to change color too. Pretty cool.

Acropora or any sps corals will sting each other or other species of corals to find space to grow. I have a porities cylindrica that was being overgrown by an acropora frag. Neither was any worse for the wear, but IMO, this is the exception to the rule. Sps can become stressed if leather corals or some of the shedding types by the chemicals that are shed. I have experienced this first hand. Thats why I have decided to go to a sps dedicated system. There are lots of things that contribute to sps corals color. Lighting, alk., circulation, nutrient levels are just some. Some even can be id'ed by color although that is not the usual. HTH....
