The safety of adding wild caught stuff

I was wondering if there was any advice about the pros and cons of adding some things that one may find while walking on the beach to a reef tank. Today there were a lot of those little mini clam like bi-valves(?) on the surface of the sand in the surf. Would it be dangerous thinking to add a few to my tank? Also there was something I have never seen before that somehow was in shallow water that I was wondering about. It was a branch of three, it was semi rigid, and odd looking. it looked like a something that could extend and retract, about a centimeter across, and retracted about 3-6" long each. It looked like a worm I suppose, with a tip/end/head that looked like a segmented prehistoric bird's beak that looked like it could open like a clam... It was really interesting looking, and if it was safe, I'd love to add it to my reef. I didn't have a camera or I would have added a picture.

I wouldn't do that if I were you. Anything you find in your area has adapted to temperate seas. You would be asking it to suddenly adapt to tropical seas. Those small clams are not likely to survive very long in your tank anyway. I think you would be just asking for trouble.
