Kalk depletes Alkalinity?

Has anyone had this experience?
My calcium was getting too high so I backed off on the dosage. In response in doing so, my alkalinty dropped to 1.5meq. I started using Seachem's Reef Builder and was wondering if it was safe to use in combination with kalkwasser. So I wrote to Seachem and this is the response I got.....

Yes, it is safe to use Reef Builder. Kalkwasser very often can
deplete your carbonate alkalinity (which is what the corals need as
much as the calcium). The Reef Builder restores the carbonate as well
as total alkalinity.

I was always under the impression that dosing kalk would maintain calcium and total alkalinty at optimal levels.

What are your thoughts on this????

Toadally:
I had a similar experience not too long ago. Just curious, did your pH rise during this drop in alkalinity?

The ph when I checked it last, which was today, was 8.3. Golfish - your post has me thinking. I went out of town for the weekend two weeks ago. For some reason I lost the siphon on my over flow and this caused my auto top off to dump all of the kalk water that was left into the sump. From my calculations that was about 2.5 gallons of water, plus I had instructed my wife to pour another 2.5 gallons of kalk water into the bucket. She had no idea this had happened. I'm wondering if all this had something to do with the lowering of the alkalinity. I'm sure the ph went up. If what you are saying is true, then this is the reason. ha!
Go figure! Thanks for the info

That could very well be your problem. No biggie, just try to raise it back up with a buffer....
