Talking Oohhh Yea!! Negotiation Is Good!

well as you all know i just graduated and the parents planned on buying me a new computer but...i knew that sending me to college is gonna cost an arm and a leg. the other day my brother told me i could have his old computer he got.....granted its ancient by todays standards but it works well enough i think....so i told the parents i'd take the computer of jeremy's and in return all i ask for is 1) they follow my 20 and 10g reef tank regiment while i'm gone. 2) buy me a eclipse 6 bowfront for me to take to college w/ a few extra bonus' on the side i am supremely confident they will spend like $120ish instead of $1800. thats the type of offer no one can refuse. my list of extras were as follows.....besides the tank.....2X13w. power compacts w/ day time and actinic lights which totals to like 50 bux tops. some live sand, i have left over rock i can use its dead but at least their arent any aptasia! wahoo! and the only other thing i asked for was 1 coral of my choosing. i anticipate it to be like a leather or something like that. how does this set up sound for a reef tank? any suggestions/comments/complaints?

i went and got the tank today. its the 7gal bowfront. i am pretty excited about it personally.....i am contemplating going fowlr but that isnt confirmed yet. probly go reef though they offered that i keep it fowlr and in return i'd get 3 corals for my 20g. its a tempting offer and the way i look at it.....i get 3 corals.....which is like 80 dollars worth and then eventually i'll just turn it into a reef anyways hahaha. i really like the bowfront.....i dont think i'll ever get another flat faced tank.....i love the bowfront dont ask me why i just find it more appealing...i'll keep you posted as i set it up.

i used to think bowfronts were the shiznit too, untill i saw a setup 155.it looked awesome standing in front of it but when you look close or at an angle the view is very distorted.i find this isnt as much an issue with smaller tanks and the 7 gallon bow is cool.its the aga right?

Sounds like a good deal to me. I absolutely love the 7 gal aga's myself, they make great little reef tanks. If you need some ideas click on my nano link.

loved the pics! i think i'm going to do something pretty similar. i went shopping today and got my heater and power head. i went with the penguin 550. it cranks out about 145gph so i think that should be good in a small system like that. i dont know what it is but im very comfortable with penguin products....seems like a quality product so i think i'm going to keep sticking with them until something drastic happens. i think i'll be getting my sand on saturday-ish.....i'll let you know how it works out. btw.....i love those shrooms of yours they are magnificent! alot of folks dont appreciate the "weed-coral" like i do....im a big fan of xenia too and i know deep down there are folks thinking....in about a month he'll be cursing the day he found the stuff....but.....its not gonna happen i like it!

Howdy Jon,

You may find that the Penguin 550 is too strong for a 7g bowfront.

Otherwise, the tank sounds like it will be great.

Good luck,

Scott.

what i had planned for the penguin is just point it straight up and turn it down as i see fit....i had a 660 on a 10g and it seemed to work fairly well so i figured if i dropped down the gph a little it'd work for 7g. bow. maybe it will be too much who knows trial and error if its too much for the bow i'll just move it to my 20g and grab one of the maxijet 201s. the heater i got i think should be perfect its just long enough that it doesnt touch the bottom of the tank and i wont have to tilt it or anything and its a submersible one so no problems there if i did..... for now that is all the materials i think i need besides my lighting. the rest i'll have to venture out a few hours to get i.e. the sand.

Howdy Jon,

Exactly, trial and error. I put a maxijet 1200 in my 20 quarantine tank to boost the overall water flow. Much to my suprise the tank looked more like a washing machine than a fish tank. I eventually switched over to a MJ 600, which was much better.

I am curious if you are going to add any kind of outside filter? I have only seen one AGA 7g bowfront fully up and running, and that was as my local Petco of all places. They had a Penguin biowheel 150 running on it with the stock lihgting.

I really would like to get one of these tanks, but am afraid that I wouldn't set it up right. I'll have to check some of the nano-tank links.

Thanks,

Scott.

nope no outside filtration....strictly sand and lr. i am not going to skim either. i dont skim my 20gal and its great....if only i could ditch the aptasia! and if youd like to see an excellent little 7g bowfront by aga look no further our very own "mr9iron" has a little 7gbowaga and not to mention he was just named "featured member of the month" for his 7g he was the first nano keeper to get it for his nano. kudos to him btw. check out his tank its nice he did a little spray bar in his tank for more controlled circulation. he has a csl lighting system and it looks very nice he stuck w/ a nice selection of corals that can withstand a small tank environment and i think that is what is key when making a nano this size. deffinitely check out some nano links and ask members about their set ups their trials/errors....i do it.....ask around i can think of at least 7 people i've emailed and just said tell me a little about your system and what you did. 100% of the time i got a speedy and helpful response.

Just out of courisity, have you checked to see if the tank will be allowed (if you are staying in a dorm)? A friend of mine has to hide her tree frog (in a 10 gal tank) cause they classsify it as a fish and that is considered a pet (????). BTW it is easy to stash a 10 gal tank not full of water but a nano might be different... just trying to look out for you.
