Question tube worms.....

tube worm feather duster whatever you call it whats the actual tube made out of? weird question i know but what is this!? is this a skin or what does the tube consist of? how is it made etc.....as i stare into my tank i started wondering what its made out of just because i think about stuff like that.....is this stuff like skin as the duster grows as does the tube or does the duster make it from the nurishment it derives from filtering the tank.....whats the deal here? this sounds like the "where do babies come from" convo but i'll but a dollar to your penny that the majority of folks probibly couldnt say one way or the other for sure. im just a curious feller so whats this structure made of anyone know?

Well, I think it is some sort of calcerous deposit... Much like snails grow their shells, tube worms (at least the ones with hard tubes) grow by excreting solids.

so are these tubes sensitive or are they just that a tube? if you dont catch me like in my situation if a aiptasia gets up next to one will it sting the tube in which case would it die? or does it have to get a hold of the tentacles......i know the aips are pressing up close to some of my tubes and wouldnt want this to happen. or are the tubes completely w/out sensory abilities?
