Hello all. I currently have a 55 gal FOWLR and want to convert it to a reef tank. How important is it to use a sand bed? Can I do a reef tank with crushed coral? Thanks.

The crushed coral is soon going to become a nutrient sink, I would suggest changing it out to a sand bed. JMHO

I second that i know its a pain to change. I would go with the send bed. if it were myself.

I third the suggestion, also your sand bed is home to some really cool stuff that seriously helps the reef out.

excellent. Thank you all for the quick replies. I have had CC in my FOWLR for the past 3 yrs now. I'm gonna go ahead and change it out with sand. I have other questions, but I think I found the answers in similar threads. Thanks for taking the time.

Hi Joe,
Yes, by all means, remove all of the crushed coral substrate and replace it with aragonite sand if you're switching to a reef aquarium.
Good luck!
