    Re: twisteds salty adventure

I am looking forward to this as some day I'm gonna have a tank other than my gold fish bowl that I have now, I'm looking forward to learning and taking notes

    Tanks,

Believe you me, i'll be reading all winter! plumbing and ventilation should be pretty easy. its nice that i have all that at my disposal. i already have a few 1000 watt halides with remote ballasts all i need is bulbs. one thing is for sure....this will be done proper!

I'm doing the same, proper and slow, got a real skimmer finally, that's cool, simple remora, got it soaking right now, got it from a fellow reeflander. Can't wait to set it up.

I'm watching you, and hopefully will learn along the way.

    Tanks

    Re: twisteds salty adventure

i pretty excited about my upcoming venture. on the plumbing end i plan to hardpipe everything and use some valve actuators so the flows will change throughout the day. i also want to incorporate some kind of vacuum attachment that will hookup to a cartridge filter specifcally for house cleaning. as for internal design...can u use portlain cement to create shelves and landscape? i know there is a curing process and all but how is it for the long haul?

it was just a thought. i had done it in my sicklett tank and let it cure for 2 months before anything went into the tank and it was real nice having the legdes and stuff. but yeah, a salt system makes me leary

I ran a framing crew at one time, make sure you reinforce.500+ gallons is nothing to play with,500=4,000 to 5,000 when done.Update with photos and all details this will be fun, best of luck.

Framer, I use to do that, if he's got a basement, I'd run some 4 x 4 post capped off into the basement floor, make a little room for equipment and put the sump in the basement, drill a couple holes in the floor, and that would take alot of weight off the main floor, just a thought

4x4s to where though?I think were talking about either running some steel beams in with the joists or bolting some 1/2"to1"steel plate to the joists. That way you wouldn't need to put in posts or a bearing wall underneath.

    Re: twisteds salty adventure

Steve he said he had a carpenter friend, so I'm sure they'll figure it out, but that is an ungodly amount of weight as you said, 500 gallons = 4250 lbs + rock, plus sump, plus fuge, we're talking 3+ tons, this is gonna be a very cool build

    Re: twisteds salty adventure

    hey! merry christmas all!
    just a quick update
cal and alk are finally looking real good and have been for a few days. alk is staying at 10 and the cal is 475. no trates/phos/amm......ph is 8., sal 1.025 with a steady temp of 77. only still thingy going on is my backwards anenome....during the day it is deep in its cave and small and gray. once the lights go out it comes to life and i can see its red and green colors.
at night ill drop some shrimp or squid in and the maroon clown feeds it and it does eat.
so....i went to my lfs a few days ago and peeked at the lighting over his invert tanks....they are using rope lighting!
i have had the anenome for a little over a month. in the beginning it hung out above the cave and looked good. after the first few days it began doing what it is still doing.
    can anyone explain this behavior?

twisted, what is rope lighting? Is it standard incandescence on romex wire.If it is maybe the anenome isn't used to your higher lighting yet.I didn't know clowns would help feed a anenome, that's pretty cool.

the feeding thing is the first ive ever seen too. it is cool. anything that is too big for his mouth he brings down to the bt and spits it onto its tentacles......the rope light is the stuff ppl put on their porches and yards....thats what im thinking the prob is, i just figured it would be coming around by now.

    Re: twisteds salty adventure

just another koolio thingy i saw this morning....i have plenty of copeods in my tank for my mandarin but when i fed the others with a frozen bloodworm breakfast the goby did his share of munching on them too! that give some extra freedom of worry should my cope population disappearing...guess he wanted red meat instead of white..
gonna go up the road to the Tropiquarium today to pick up a few more pieces of live rock and counting on the mrs to see something cool. its funny, i pick out the cheaper things and she picks out the pricey and nicer pieces...i think i want to try some favia or styliporia...we'll see....
